The Future Underground City Research Institute (UPA) of Shenzhen University, led by Professor Chen Xiangsheng, an academician of the CAE Member, was established in 2018 relying on the School of Civil and Traffic Engineering. The research institute adheres to the purpose of making original contributions to the construction of human ecological civilization, is committed to the goal of protecting and building a beautiful ecological environment, and is based on exploring efficient ways of urban underground space development and land resource utilization.

Focusing on solving major scientific problems and technical problems in the construction of major national infrastructure, the Institute deeply integrates advanced technologies such as Internet plus, big data mining and advanced sensing elements with traditional geotechnical mechanics and underground structure engineering, creates modern engineering for resilient urban construction, innovates the theory and method of urban comprehensive multi compliance planning, and develops the technology of "intelligent civil engineering". Since its establishment, the Institute has undertaken more than 140 vertical scientific research projects, including major projects and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 50 horizontal scientific research projects, including Hong Kong's Tomorrow Lantau, Zhuhai's Mangzhou Tunnel, and other related projects. In recent three years, it has won two provincial and ministerial special awards for scientific and technological progress, four first prizes, and three international awards.

The National Key Laboratory for Intelligent Construction and Maintenance of Geotechnical and Tunnel Engineering in Extreme Environment was established on the basis of the original State Key Laboratory for Rail Transit Engineering Informatization, relying on China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group Co., Ltd., Southwest Jiaotong University and Shenzhen University, and was approved for construction in March 2023. The laboratory conducts research on the major strategic needs of countries such as transportation powers, land space expansion, territory expansion in depth, the "the Belt and Road" and the technology frontier of large-scale complex geotechnical and tunnel engineering.

The laboratory has long been committed to scientific and technological breakthroughs in geotechnical and tunnel engineering in difficult mountainous areas, deep-water waters, and sensitive urban areas. It has achieved important results in comprehensive survey and intelligent design of complex environments, comprehensive prevention and control of geotechnical and tunnel engineering disasters in special and complex environments, and construction of geotechnical and tunnel engineering in special and complex environments. It has promoted the continuous breakthrough of China's railway tunnel length from "20km → 30km → 40km", supported the construction of a number of iconic national engineering projects, and achieved a leap from "catcher" to "leader". It has won 20 national science and technology awards, including 2 national science and technology progress special prizes and 3 first prizes.
