In order to implement Chairman Xi Jinping’s proposal at the United Nations General Assembly, “Strive to reach the peak of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, and strive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060”, and apply the concept of green, safe and sustainable urban development to efficiently use underground space and respond to the impact of global climate change, the 8th China (Shanghai) Conference on Infrastructure Development of Underground Space 2021 was successfully held Online and Offline in Shanghai from March 26 to 27, 2021. The theme of this conference is "Responding to climate change, to make green, safe and efficient use of urban underground space". It is hoped that through exchanges, the green, safe and efficient use of urban underground space will be realized, the inclusiveness, resilience, and livability of the city will be improved, and urban safety and sustainable development will be realized.

The conference was hosted by Shenzhen University, Tongji University, the Municipal Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, and the Associated Research Centers for the Urban Underground Space (ACUUS), and co-organized by 14 units including the College of Civil and Transportation Engineering of Shenzhen University, Key Laboratory for Resilient Infrastructures of Coastal Cities (Shenzhen University), Ministry of Education, Underground Polis Academy of Shenzhen University. Academician Qian Qihu served as the honorary chairman of the conference, academician Chen Xiangsheng, the dean of our college, served as the chairman of the conference, and the executive dean, Professor Long Wujian, served as the chairman of the expert committee of the conference.

Chief Engineer Liu Qianwei of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-rural Development, Tong Xiaohua, Vice President of Tongji University, and Academician Chen Xiangsheng, Chairman of the Conference, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony of the conference. The winner of the National Highest Science and Technology Award, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Qian Qihu of the Army University of Engineering, and Professor Chen Xiangsheng, Dean of our College and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, respectively made "Underground Space Development and Utilization and Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality" and " The report titled "Low-Carbonization Strategies and Practices in Underground Space Construction" provides an in-depth explanation of the national strategy of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" and human needs. Professor Mingwei Hu from the Underground Polis Academy of Shenzhen University gave a report on “Modeling of Passenger Flow Organization and Distribution in Underground Transport Hubs”, and Associate Professor Hong Chengyu gave a report on “Research on Deep Foundation Pit Safety Assessment Based on Machine Learning”. In addition, 12 colleagues including Deputy Dean Su Dong and Professor Bao Xiaohua of Shenzhen University Future Underground City Research Institute attended the meeting.
